New York (dpa) - The first Jackass movie in 3D raked in 50 million dollars to top North American cinema earnings for the weekend, industry figures showed.

The newest film from Johnny Knoxville is the first of the franchise in 3D, and beat the openings of the previous films Jackass: The Movie and Jackass Number Two. The franchise began as a television show filled with gags aimed at young men.

Director Robert Schwentke's action comedy Red landed in second place with 22.5 million dollars. The film stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren. Read more »

Los Angeles (dpa) - British actor Rhys Ifans is to play the main villain in the forthcoming Spider-Man movie, Sony Pictures announced Monday.

Director Marc Webb chose Ifans for the villainous role despite the actor being known for his goofy acting persona, best exemplified in his role opposite Hugh Grant in the film Notting Hill.

Ifans joins Andrew Garfield, who will star in the title role, and Emma Stone, who portrays the main female character in the film, which is a prequel to the previous movies and shows Spider-Man and his alter ego Peter Parker in his formative years. Read more »

New York (dpa) - The film version of Facebook continued to win friends at the North American box office in its second weekend atop the cinema charts.

The Social Network earned 15.5 million dollars on the weekend with its story of the founding of the 500-million-member website, industry figures showed Sunday. It beat out romantic comedy Life as We Know It starring Katherine Heigl, which brought in 14.6 million dollars in its opening weekend. Read more »

Sydney (dpa) - The run of Australian director George Miller's Mad Max films may have come to an end with the soaring Australian dollar delaying yet again production of Mad Max 4: Fury Road.

Suppliers in the outback town of Broken Hill said Monday they had been told by Kennedy Miller Productions that the fourth in the road movie series would not begin filming until 2012.

Filming of another sequel to the 1979 film by director George Miller and writing partners Miller and Byron Kennedy was to have begun earlier this year but was first postponed in July. Read more »

Tehran (dpa) - Iran has selected a movie about the lives of US soldiers in Iraq as its nominee for the Oscars in the best foreign language film category, the news network Press TV reported Tuesday.

The 100-minute film titled Farewell Baghdad is directed by Mehdi Naderi. Set in Baghdad, it portrays the lives of American and Iraqi soldiers in Iraq.

Naderi started his career in 1988 in the theatre, but later made several documentary and short films.

Farewell Baghdad is the first feature film directed by the 37- year-old Naderi.
