Teacher resigns after sexual affair with learner
A teacher at Kayengona Combined School, some 10 kilometres east of Rundu, reportedly resigned on Thursday after a criminal case was opened against him for having sexual relations with a 16-year-old learner.
The 30-year-old teacher has allegedly been having a sexual affair with the learner at his home from November 2011 up to last month.
The mother of the victim, who is also a teacher at the same school, reported the incident to the Namibian Police (NamPol) on Thursday.
NamPol Crime Investigation Co-ordinator in the Kavango Region Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton told Nampa that the suspect has not been arrested yet, but the police have taken a statement from the suspect and it will be send to the Prosecutor-General for a decision.
The Deputy Commissioner said the suspect was charged under the Combating of Immoral Practices Amendment Act, 2000.
Amandus Kupembona, the Shambyu Education Circuit Inspector under which the school falls, said on Friday that the case of the teacher/learner relationship was brought to his office on Friday, but he is yet to study the detailed report.
Kupembona said he is also waiting to receive a resignation letter from the teacher.
Meanwhile, the Kayengona Combined School Principal Anna Mateya refused to comment on her teacher’s alleged affair with the learner, and referred all questions to the regional education office, saying she is not allowed to speak to the media.
