After a three year absence from the music scene, Namibian Kwaito star and rapper Tukondjela Haiyambo Ngodji, stage name Qonja, shares his journey in growing spiritually with us.

A journey of spiritual enrichment and personal growth was, according to the man himself, the reason for the silence.

“I focussed on my life. I have been on a spiritual journey, and it is going very well. I am in a gold mine,” Qonja told tjil!, adding that his latest work, soon to be enjoyed by fans, holds more value - with significant change in his lyrical content.

“I am inspired by the work I am now producing.”

He did not change his style, but his lyrics have been given a complete twist.

“My new work is a reflection of who I am now. I realised that my lyrics should be inspiring and motivating.”

His Kwaito/Hip-hop sounds will thus entail “more powerful and positive” lyrics. “What you speak is what you’ll become,” said Qonja.

He added that on his journey of the past three years he has “learned to know God and realised that all the wisdom I need to be successful, is in the word of God. The renewal of my mind and heart has been a blessing for me.

“In the past I have made many bad decisions, but now I know for sure that somewhere out there, someone’s life will be positively changed by the decisions I make.

“Too often we expect to see success in material forms, but success also comes in other forms, for example wisdom, knowledge, family, and knowing God. I have chosen to surround myself only with positive company. This has had a positive impact on me and my art.”

Qonja recently received endorsement from the global brand PUMA. This is the same brand endorsing the world record holder athlete Usain Bolt. Our national rugby and soccer teams are also endorsed by this brand.

”That same brand saw potential in me. I share this because I see potential within my industry. The industry that I have designed for myself within the local music landscape, is about building the broken hearted, feeding the poor, paying school fees, and just feeding the nation with knowledge. I believe I am sitting in a billion dollar industry and this is only a scratch on the surface of a goldmine.
“I chose this journey to become a better human being, a better entertainer, a better friend, a better family member, a better businessman, and a better member of society.”
